How ironic that over the course of Black History Month and at the start of Women’s History Month, two black figures, Remy Ma & Nicki Minaj, are “beefing” with each other? Apparently, the beef started at the bud of Nicki’s career in 2007. In between that time and after Remy Ma served a six-year term in prison, the women have gone back and forth. But recently Remy released a “diss track” and everyone is talking about it. It seems as though a war has started, but what is this really about?
Ego, fame, and power are a few words that come to mind. Or is it just for entertainment? Either way, the world is watching. It has become the headlines of the Black Community as if there are not bigger fish to fry. In 2017, blacks are still fighting for equality in all realms of their existence, such as education, unemployment, mass incarceration, the fight against gentrification and a biased judicial system, police brutality, systemic racism and so much more. Instead of bashing one another, what if these women actually used their voices to empower women and build up the community? The reality of this is that the Willie Lynch syndrome still has strongholds over us today.
And yet, we, the people, are consuming this madness not realizing that we ourselves continue to breed it subconsciously. Even in our own lives, we do or say things to destroy the character of another sister. For what? When will it stop? When will we learn to build with one another and uplift each other up? Our daughters grow up to replicate the same things that they have seen us do or what they watch on T.V. and the cycle continues. It is time for not just Black Women but all Black People to seriously consider their actions in comparison to the things they proclaim they want to see changed.
It has been said that a nation can rise no higher than its woman. Make it a duty to uplift every woman you see and if someone tries to ‘throw shade’ your way ignore it and kill it with kindness. Black Woman Lead! It is our nature to do so.
